Social Media for Your Blog
Apr 21st
I was a little surprised recently to find a lot of bloggers do not utilize Social Media for their blogs. As a blogger, Internet Marketer and a Virtual Assistant, I tend to forget that not everyone is using all the online marketing tools I use on a daily basis. In order to monetize your blog on a consistent basis, it’s imperative that you build a following. A lot of bloggers are under the impression that because there is an RSS feed button available on their blog, those who want to follow will click it. From the reader standpoint it can be confusing. They may not be familiar with the different methods they can receive your blog feed, so they don’t proceed any further. They may or may not be back to your blog because of this.
How to Install an RSS Feed in WordPress
Apr 15th
Obtaining and adding fresh new content to your website or blog is one of the most valuable tasks every webmaster must complete on a regular basis or at the very least, see to it that it is added one way or another. RSS feeds can be a great way to get a steady stream of fresh valuable content added to your site regularly. This is not to say that you shouldn’t also publish your own unique content, you should do that on a regular basis as well. You can turn your visitors into returning customers by making sure that there is always fresh, relative content available for them to enjoy.
There are many different add-ons, widgets, and plugins available free across the internet that make installing an RSS feed into your website or blog extremely simple. If you are using a WordPress blog as your CMS then adding a RSS plugin to automate the process of importing feeds to your blog is a snap. There are several available, free of charge right from the WordPress Plugin Directory.
Your first step to getting your plugin is to login to your WordPress admin panel and click on Plugins and then Add New. To find a plugin simply search RSS and a whole list of them will appear. I have tried a couple different ones and prefer the KB Advanced RSS Widget. Although I have in the past and do currently still use others. When making your selection, keep your site in mind and try to choose one that will fully meet your needs. Most are the same as far as operation, but there are variances in appearance.
How Can You Add Audio to a Blog?
Apr 12th
I had been looking for ways to add extra pizazz to my blogs and sites, and have only just got into audio and podcasts. Podcasts seem to rank well in SEO. I started by reading a couple of my articles to create a soundfile (using Audacity shareware) and LAME shareware as the format converter to.mp3. It was all easy to set up. The results were passable, and I quickly learned how to edit/splice the sound files using Audacity (after getting tired of umpteen re-takes).
Then I looked more closely at WordPress and discovered that I couldn’t just load and go. I dug around and came across a number of articles referring to WordPress plugins such as Cool Player and Anarchy Media Player. I didn’t feel like setting up yet another plug in, with the attendant danger of the software becoming unsupported and so on (lorelle’s WordPress blog was very informative).
So, I got to thinking. I’d just posted a podcast on Podbean and wondered whether I could make use of that. And I did, though it only appears to work on WordPress blogs which are not hosted by WordPress themselves.

RSS Feeds – What Are They?
Feb 5th
Well, it’s a web-feed format which is used to publish up-to-date information, as it happens, to another site. It means that you can set up an RSS feed on your own website to include automatic feeds from another website such as a news page or a music page or a page of interest. It means that, every time something is updated on that other website, it feeds into your website and your website visitors can see it. It can be used to notify you or others of what’s going on. RSS feeds can benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from their favourite websites or to combine feeds from many sites into one place.
So, if you own a car sales business, you may wish to include an RSS feed on your website from a car-related website so that your visitors are kept up to date with car-related issues about, for example, the hottest new sports cars, without actually having to leave your website.
A lot of people will subscribe to RSS feeds from news websites so that they are automatically updated when a news flash comes out. It’s just another way of being able to keep informed as and when something happens without actually having to visit that page on a regular basis. It’s like someone tapping you on the shoulder and saying. “hey, there’s something new happened”.
The content summaries that the recipient receives contain just enough information without overwhelming the reader with details. If the reader is interested and then wants additional information, they can click on the item to access the website which contains additional details. Some of the types of information that can be delivered in RSS feeds include:
- blog feeds
- article feeds
- forum feeds
- news feeds
- discounts feeds
It could also be used for distributing news about new jobs, new homes for sale, entertainment, calendar events, law enforcement, auction items and a whole host of other news-related topics. The possibilities are endless.
You can let people subscribe to your own website feeds so that, each time you release something of interest, they are informed via the RSS feeder. If you are the type of company which has regular offers, regular newsworthy announcements and regular items of interest that people need to be aware of, then have an icon on your website which allows them to subscribe to an RSS feed. They’ll be updated on what you’re offering and they can opt out at any time, which is one of the beauties of the feeds.
Use it as another marketing strategy and get feeding the public!
